Winter Release Cuvée HHS Chardonnay
2024

Winemaker’s Notes

This unique expression unites the two indisputably greatest Chardonnay vineyards of Napa Valley: Hyde, where we've worked for 25 years, and its neighbor a few miles west, Hudson Ranch – both shaped by the foggy climate and dense clay soils of Carneros. I could not imagine two more complementary vineyards: Hyde brings mineral focus and electric acid structure, while Hudson offers breadth, layered depth, and obvious power. The final blend marries Hyde's authority with Hudson's density – a compelling mix that carries the deep richness and piercing intensity that's made these two vineyards so renowned throughout the wine world. We fermented and aged the wine in large 500L puncheons to tame Hudson's natural richness and carefully preserve Hyde's fine line of acidity, resulting in a wine of real power and presence, deeply pitched intensity, and serious volume, albeit with lower acidity than our Sonoma wines. The breadth, texture, and complexity on display here are truly singular, and I fully expect this wine will continue to grow in stature in bottle over the coming decade.

Explosive, expressive aromas and flavors – chamomile, ginger, apricot, honeydew, golden apple, and orange oil – open with air to almond and oatmeal, underpinned by flinty minerals. The palate is rich, full-bodied, and broad, with oily, chewy layers. Fruit richness marries mineral tension, and lively acidity lifts the long, pulsating finish. Serve at 55°F; drink 2026–2034.
