Fall Release Eddie‘s Patch Syrah
2024

Winemaker’s Notes

As the Mayacamas range extends northwest from Napa, we reach the high-elevation Hoppe-Kelly Vineyard, southeast of Healdsburg on the edge of wilderness, where the Russian River, Chalk Hill, and Alexander Valley districts intersect. Mountain vineyards are prized for eroded rocky soils, mild days, and gently warm nights – conditions that let small, intense grapes ripen steadily at moderate sugars and elevated acidity. That's why we've loved Hoppe-Kelly since our first harvest here in 2000; its south-facing hillside offers one of Sonoma County's finest views, and its iron-infused soils build the foundation for world-class quality. Since replanting in 2014 to superior genetic material, quality has leapt forward, and Eddie's Patch, first produced that same year 2000, has rarely tasted better than in this vintage. Waves of deep fruit richness offset by classic mountain, savory-Syrah complexity. Unusually for such a concentrated wine, it drinks beautifully on release, yet will cellar longer than any of us have the patience for.

The wine's aromas and flavors feature blackcurrant and blackberry pastille, black pepper, licorice, juniper, and olive. It's succulent, full-bodied, and enveloping, with jasmine and lavender notes throughout. The tannins are deep and round, allowing the wine's broad, layered texture to dominate. A mildly exotic, flamboyant expression, this offers lip-smacking deliciousness. Decant for an hour, and drink between 2027 and 2040.
